What to Pack for a Boat Day in Malta

A boat day in Malta is one of the best days you'll have on the island. It's also easy to undermine with poor preparation. Here's exactly what to bring — the essentials, the things people regularly forget, and a few items that will genuinely improve your day.
Sun Protection — More Than You Think You Need
High-factor sunscreen (SPF 50) — apply before you get on the boat, reapply every two hours, and don't forget ears, the back of the neck, and feet
A wide-brimmed hat — the sun on the open water is significantly more intense than on land
UV-protective sunglasses — the reflection off the water is bright even on partially cloudy days
A rash vest or light long-sleeved layer for the cruising sections between stops
Food and Drinks
There are no shops or restaurants once you're out on the water. Bring everything you need for the full day. A good rule of thumb: more water than you think you'll need (at least 1.5 litres per person), a substantial lunch, and snacks. The boat has a cooler so cold drinks stay cold.
Water — at least 1.5 litres per person, more in July and August
Lunch and snacks — sandwiches, fruit, cheese, crackers, whatever travels well
Wine, beer or soft drinks if you want them — the cooler will keep everything cold
Swimming and Water Gear
Swimwear — obviously, but bring a spare set if you have room; a wet swimsuit is uncomfortable on the cruise home
Towels — at least one per person; a quick-dry microfibre towel takes up much less space
Water shoes — essential if you're going ashore on rocky Comino coastline
Snorkelling mask and snorkel — bring your own if you have one; a well-fitting mask makes a significant difference
The Things People Forget
Motion sickness tablets — if you're prone, take them before departure; the crossing to Comino can be choppy in certain winds
A dry bag for your phone and wallet — nothing ruins a boat day like a wet phone
A light jacket or fleece for the ride home — evenings cool down quickly on the water, even in summer
Cash — there are no card facilities on the water and some departure points have limited ATM access
What Not to Bring
Heavy luggage — storage on the boat is limited; pack a day bag, not a suitcase
Fragile items — the boat moves; anything that can break probably will
